Night Visit

Waking in the depth of night

Perhaps as a dream concludes

But my memory recalls only that I want to turn

And rearrange the pillow.

In that brief state of consciousness

As my eyes open and scan the blackened room

The chair piled high with laundry

The dog in heavy slumber

With his chin upon my feet

I hear your name.

It has been a very long time

Since that has happened to me

Since I woke to your essence

While without conscious thought

Your name floats across my mind

In the nighttime darkness

And dances upon my lips

As I repeat the sweet word to confirm

It is really what I heard.

And I think, well I wonder

If you had been visiting me

In my dream-state.

Or, was it I who singularly brought forth

From the recesses of memory

Your essence with which to dream?

My desire to hold you again,

Know you again

Feel you again.

Did you really visit me

While I slept

Gliding gently next to me

Knees tucked behind mine, just so

Arms wrapped snugly around me

Thinking same thoughts

Dreaming same dreams

Until, I woke to turn

And, you floated away

Leaving only a trail of your spirit

Which my conscious mind could measure.

If I had a choice

On how to interpret this experience

This waking to your essence

The tenderness which remained

As my eyes grew heavy,

Tranquil slumber consuming me again

I choose to believe

Your spirit did travel to lay with mine

Entwined as One

Touching in the dark

Reawaken the Forever Love

These souls share

While bodies slept in common form.

And, so I shall.
